Notice of proposed tree removal - Sunderland Road, South Shields
Location of tree(s) to be removed
3 cherry, 3 hawthorn and 4 laburnum trees on Sunderland Road, South Shields.
Reason for removal
The aim of this proposed scheme is to improve bus journey times on the South Shields to Sunderland Corridor. The works will include a bypass for bus services travelling northbound on Sunderland Road. In addition, the right turn lane for vehicles entering Grosvenor Road is to be extended. This will ensure that ahead traffic is not blocked when right turning vehicles queue beyond the current right turn lane. This will help to improve the efficiency of the junction.
A total of 10 individual trees and small section of a group of trees (with stems within 1.5m of the proposed kerb line) will need to be removed from the central reservation to enable construction of the scheme. The intention is to replace these trees with at least a 20% increased number of trees.
The trees have been arboriculturally inspected by the Tree Team and were assessed as being in a fair/poor condition.
This Public Notice relates to the Sunderland Road Bus Service Improvement Plan. For more info, see Sunderland Road / Grosvenor Road junction improvements.
