Sunderland Road / Grosvenor Road junction improvements
Contents
Overview
South Tyneside Council is making some improvements to the junction at Sunderland Road / Grosvenor Road.
The aim of the works is to improve bus journey times between Sunderland and South Shields.
This scheme is being funded under the Bus Service Improvement Plan (BSIP) and is being provided out of the £163.5million made available to the North East region.
It is planned that the works will be carried out by the Council's in-house construction team.
The scheme is due to start in Summer 2025.
What we are doing
The works will include a bypass for bus services travelling northbound on Sunderland Road.
This will mean that buses only need to stop when pedestrians are waiting to cross.
The right turn lane for vehicles entering Grosvenor Road will be extended. This will reduce the chance of ahead traffic being blocked when right turning vehicles queue beyond the current right turn lane.
This will help to improve the efficiency of the junction and reduce travel times and congestion.
Removal of trees
For the works to take place, ten existing trees will need to be removed in the central reserve. A detailed tree survey and inspection by our Tree Officers have confirmed that these trees need to be removed, and have been classified from fair to poor.
The intention is to replace these trees with twelve new 'heavy standard' trees on the central reserve.
The proposed removal of trees falls under a 'Duty to Consult'. This process will commence on 17 April 2025 and will be open for feedback for 28 days. To leave feedback, see public notices.
All comments and feedback received during this process will be considered in the final design of the scheme.
In addition to the above, the Tree Officer has reported another five trees outside of the scheme footprint that also need to be removed, as they are in very poor condition or are damaged. These would not require a duty to consult notice as they would fall under exemptions due to their condition and the risk they pose to the highway users.
These are also proposed to be replaced following completion of the scheme in the central reservation or the same locality (Readhead Park area).
For more information, see the Sunderland Road / Grosvenor Road junction improvements scheme design.
Timescales
The detailed design of the scheme is due to be completed in late May 2025.
The construction work is then due to start in June 2025 and will take approximately 20 weeks.
A letter is being sent out to local residents in week commencing 14 April 2025, with a further letter approximately 2 weeks before the actual scheme commences. Additionally, advance warning signs will be installed on the approaches to inform road users of the upcoming works.
