Overview

When carrying out tree works we follow a rule of minimum tree removal where possible.

We also make sure any decisions are in line with guidance on the protection of trees and the South Tyneside Tree and Woodland Policy.

You can find detailed information about how we handle:

When we work on trees

The Council may work on trees or hedges:

  • to manage risks
  • to deliver Council objectives
  • as part of routine maintenance on the trees and hedges the Council has responsibility for
  • as required by law
  • due to a service request
  • where large trees may became a risk to neighbours or other residents

When we may not work on trees

The Council are unlikely to work on trees if it is to:

  • reduce shade or improve light into properties
  • improve a signal such as phone, TV or satellite reception
  • improve a scenic view
  • reduce seasonal issues (leaf fall, sap, pollen, fruit or flowers)
  • stop bird roosts and bird droppings
  • reduce small twigs falling from trees or general shedding
  • manage a potential risk, such as the fear a tree or branch may fall
  • improve the way things look (aesthetic reasons)

For more information on the Council's management of trees, read the full Tree and Woodland Policy.

Felling trees

We will avoid felling trees unless it is absolutely necessary:

  • if a Council Tree Officer has assessed a tree and removal is necessary for safety reasons, such as dead, dying or dangerous
  • as part of a selective removal or thinning operation
  • if the tree is considered by one of the Councils Tree Officers to have outgrown its location
  • the tree has been proven to have caused significant structural damage
  • when required to by law (if pruning is not enough)
  • where development has been agreed through the planning process
  • where the Council has a duty to comply to

If you feel you have an issue with a tree that is in line with our management, you can report issues online.
