Overview

If you are travelling to South Tyneside to take part in, or support those taking part in the Great North Run (Sunday 8 September 2024), you may find the following information useful to help with your travel plans.

Please only travel by car if the journey is considered essential. Some roads in the area are closed to allow the Run to take place but they are quickly re-opened as the race passes by. For more information please see road closures.

If you are planning on driving, please do not rely on using satnav devices, instead use WAZE as it will know what roads have been closed.

Due to the high volume of people travelling there are also likely to be some delays on public transport.

We would suggest after the run to let the traffic pass and have a bite to eat at one of our restaurants or enjoy a refreshing drink in one of the seafront pubs.

Road closures

For information on road closures on Sunday 8 September 2024, see Road closures.

Instead of using sat nav, try using WAZE: Great North Run. This will know which roads are closed across the borough.

Car parking

If you want to leave early and experience minimum delays, you can park in South Shields Town Centre which is only a 10 minute walk from the finish line and has lots of places to eat, drink or shop too.

Additional routes will be opened as the race progresses and junctions on exit routes are cleared. Please be patient: up to 75,000 people exit South Shields after the race.

You can drive and park at the finish in South Shields then get a metro from South Shields Transport Interchange, or a shuttle bus from Bents Park Road to Haymarket Metro Station for the start of the run.

The start of the event is about a 15 minute walk from Haymarket Metro Station.

For more information on our town centre car parks, see South Shields town centre car parks.

If you don't mind leaving late, you can park on the South Shields seafront.

For more information on parking in South Shields, please see parking

There are also a number of Metro stations with car parking available. For more information please see Nexus: Public transport in Tyne and Wear.
