About this course

This training course is for those who have any contact with children, young people and their families and have undertaken the e-learning foundation module on Child Abuse and Neglect.

The aim of this course is to offer participants an opportunity to develop their understanding of neglect and explore ways to define neglect, assess the levels of concern and develop appropriate inter-agency responses.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of the session participants will be able to:

  • Define neglect within the context of current research and policy
  • Recognise the nature, prevalence and causal factors of neglect
  • Reflect on lessons from Child Safeguarding Practice Reviews
  • Identify the short and long-term impact of neglect on attachment, child development and behaviour
  • Apply systemic approaches to understand what it means for the child to live within this environment
  • Recognise the impact of values on the professional perception of neglect
  • Recognise what prevents effective work with families where issues of neglect are prevalent
  • Use appropriate tools to assess the level of concern and risk
  • This course is ran by Russ Saunders, Learning and Development Adviser / Member of the multi-agency Pool of Trainers.
