Unsung heroes supporting South Tyneside communities throughout the coronavirus pandemic are being celebrated and recognised in a new initiative.

#ProudtoSupport is a new campaign showing that community spirit continues to be alive and well in South Tyneside as people support each other during the crisis.

The Mayor of South Tyneside, Councillor Norman Dick said: "The coronavirus pandemic is having a huge impact on everyday lives, with people having to change the way they live and work. Yet people really are going above and beyond to support each other during these exceptionally challenging times, stepping out of their day-to-day role or playing a part so that others can carry out their essential roles or help those in need.

"#ProudtoSupport is an opportunity to show great appreciation for all those doing such amazing work in our communities.

"From the workers in the public sector including health, hospitals, care homes, emergency services, Council and schools to GP practise, pharmacies, shops and businesses, as well as charitable organisations and volunteers in our wider community - they are all working incredibly hard and doing extraordinary things to help keep South Tyneside going, while helping to keep themselves and others safe.

"Individuals in the community are caring in their own ways too, from being a good neighbour to providing entertainment, such as singing or creating resources to share online to help people learn or have fun. This campaign also aims to celebrate the little gestures that can make such a big difference and bring a smile to someone's face.

"We have such fantastic community spirit here in South Tyneside. We want to share the stories of those who deserve recognition for the work they are doing."

As part of the campaign, people are being invited to nominate someone for a special #ProudtoSupport 'thank you' and to share their inspiring story, with nominations sought from across all sectors.

People can also share their own stories.

Proud to Support is part of the #LoveSouthTyneside campaign, which was launched last year to promote everything that is great about South Tyneside, with a strong focus on civic pride, community spirit, volunteering and business links.
