Overview
When schools return in September 2014 you may see a car equipped with a camera outside the school gates.
This is in response to requests from many of you for increased enforcement. The car is designed to make sure that people do not park where they shouldn't, so they can avoid putting children at risk of injury.
People who don't follow the rules will be issued with a penalty charge notice.
We know that the school run can be a stressful time. The last thing we want to do is make it harder, but it's really important for everyone's safety that you observe the rules and park safely. That's why it's a good idea to get to school early and look for somewhere safe and legal to park.
If you need advice on where to park please talk to your school or to the Council on 0191 424 7900.
Parking on double and single yellow lines
Please avoid parking on any yellow lines. Cars parked there can obstruct lines of sight for pedestrians who want to cross the road. Any car left unattended on a single or double yellow line for more than five minutes will be issued with a penalty charge notice.
Parking on school keep clear markings
In the interests of safety you should never park on school keep clear markings. Any vehicle found on them can be issued with a penalty charge notice. This also applies to Blue Badge Holders.
Double parking
You can not double park even if you remain in your vehicle. Doing so causes an obstruction for other road users and is a danger to pedestrians. Any motorist causing an obstruction or double-parked will be asked to move on. If you don't move on then action will be taken.
Other ways of getting to and from school
There are other ways of getting to and from school. Perhaps your child could walk, travel by bike or take the bus or the Metro.
