Local Access Forum

The Tyne and Wear Joint Local Access Forum (JLAF) provides advice on managing and improving public access to land in the countryside and urban areas for open-air recreation and enjoyment.

About the Forum

The Forum was established by:

  • South Tyneside Council
  • Gateshead Council
  • North Tyneside Council
  • Sunderland City Council
  • Newcastle City Council

It is a statutory body created under the Countryside and Rights of Way Act 2000.

The Forum:

  • is responsible for examining how the local authorities manage public rights of way in their areas
  • suggests improvements to allow people to enjoy the countryside and network of paths in the area
  • seek to influence (where relevant) national government proposals

It's interested in:

  • nature conservation
  • farming and land management
  • heritage
  • tourism
  • local business
  • recreation and sport
  • access for disabled users
  • health
  • education
  • transport
  • attracting new users to the network of paths in this area

Forum members

The Forum comprises of people of all ages, who are enthusiastic about the rights of way network and access to the outdoors.

In accepting new members, the Forum makes sure there is a wide representation of people including the users of rights of ways and access, the owners and occupiers of land, and people with other relevant interests.
