Overview

South Shields market is an integral part of the town's identity, and was remodelled in 2016.

The market place adds vibrancy and diversity to the local economy and the town's official 'Market Town' status is an enviable asset.

The market place has been remodelled to provide a 21st Century public space, which retains its historic function, while creating new opportunities for the community.

Improvements

Improvements include:

• a new canopy roof around the perimeter of the trading area designed to provide a partial covering, which can be used for protecting stalls or shoppers
• new stalls
• external seating areas
• tree-lined routes
• new paving and improved shared surfaces making the market more accessible to members of the community
• reduced traffic movement
• external lighting
• access to electricity and water supplies
