Overview
The Word, National Centre for the Written Word is the state-of-the-art, multi award winning cultural venue set in the heart of South Shields Town Centre.
This cultural attraction has attracted visitors from the Borough and beyond.
The four-storey building on the town's Market Place celebrates the Borough's literary heritage, and is the home for North East writing talent.

Has over 70,000 books, an improved local studies offer, more events and activities for everyone to enjoy and lots of computers as part of the People's Network. - OpenZone
Supports schools in creative digital learning and encourages students and teachers to develop a variety of cross curricular projects, from film-making and podcasting, to animation and coding. - FabLab
Provides a space for anyone with an interest in design to have the opportunity to access 3D printers, vinyl and laser cutters as part of a programme of workshops. - StoryWorld
Incorporates stunning backdrop projections and sound effects in order to create a magical world of fun, fantasy and adventure for children and families. - Viewing terrace
Located on the rooftop and provides you with optimum views of the River Tyne. - Visitor Information Centre
Sells a great selection of arts, crafts, stationery, jewellery, birthday cards, prints and books. - Hire rooms
Provide an iconic and unique venue for meetings, corporate events, training sessions, workshops and conferences. There are a number of flexible spaces that can be adapted to meet your needs. - The Round
An events space in the rooftop level. It features a full programme of events and can host up to 150 people.
