Overview

The Register Office is open Monday to Friday, 9am and 4pm.

You can contact us on 0191 424 6350 and leave us a message, or email registrars@southtyneside.gov.uk.

Appointments are required, except for the purchase of copies of birth / death / marriage certificates.

Copies of certificates can be issued until 3.15pm, telephone certificates are issued until 2.30pm. Same day issue of certificates is possible, subject to availablity.

Registering a death

Unless the death has been referred to the coroner, it is a legal requirement to register the death within five days. 

All appointments for registering a death must take place in person at the Register Office.

To make an appointment call 0191 427 7000 (Monday to Friday, 8am to 6.30pm).

We ask that a maximum of two people attend the appointment if possible.

Registering a birth

Birth registrations are by appointment only.

To book an appointment call the Council's Contact Centre on 0191 427 7000 (Monday to Friday, 8am to 6.30pm). 

Copies of birth certificates can be purchased at your appointment for £11 each.

Copies of certificates

You can also get copies of birth, death or marriage certificates from the Register Office.

You can get these in person at the office (Monday to Friday, 9am to 3.15pm) or you can order by telephone on 0191 424 6350 (Monday to Friday, 9am until 2.30pm).

Marriages and civil partnerships

At the moment, the Barrington Suite has a capacity of 50 and the Garden Room has a capacity of 20.  

Weddings can also take place outside in the Garden at the Register Office, where the capacity is 20.

Notice of Marriage and Civil Partnership 

To give Notice of Marriage, appointments are Monday to Friday 9am to 2.30pm.
