Carers in the Spotlight

The vital role played by unpaid carers is in the spotlight this week as the council comes together with its partners to mark Carers' Week.  

As the COVID-19 pandemic continues, more people than ever before are taking on caring responsibilities for relatives and friends who are older, disabled or who need support.

In recognition of their work South Shields Town Hall will be lit up in blue and green most days this week for both the NHS and carers and "Thank you carers" messages will be posted on screen throughout the Borough.  

The number of adult carers in the UK has risen by a third to almost 9 million.

Councillor Tracey Dixon, Deputy Leader with responsibility for Independence and Wellbeing at South Tyneside Council, said: "There perhaps has never been a better time to highlight the vital role that unpaid carers do in our communities.

"These unsung heroes do an amazing job tending to the needs of others but we know that caring impacts on all aspects of life from relationships to health to finances.

"By marking this week we aim to recognise their contribution and help them access the support they need."
