Child and Maternal Health Profile
In May some indicators have been updated as part of the Fingertips child & maternal health profile. Included in this update was:
- 16- to 17-year-olds not in education, employment or training (NEET) or whose activity is not known.
- Population vaccination coverage: HPV vaccination coverage for one dose (Male/Female 12- to 13-year-old)
- A&E attendances (under 18 years)

16- to 17-year-olds NEET
This indicator release shows the percentage of 16-17-year-olds who are not in education, employment or training (NEET), or whose activity is not known for the financial year 2023/24.
- In South Tyneside 5.7% of 16-17-year-olds were classed as NEET or their status was unknown.
- This was not statistically different to the national figure of 5.4% or the regional figure of 5.8%.
- There is not a significant change in the trend of this indicator.
Population vaccination coverage: HPV vaccination coverage for one dose (Male 12- to 13-year-old)
This indicator release shows the proportion of male students in year 8 (aged 12 to 13) who have received the HPV vaccine for the financial year 2023/24.
- In South Tyneside the proportion of males that have received the HPV vaccine was 77.1%.
- This was significantly higher than the national proportion of 67.7% as well as the regional proportion of 70.2%.
- Fingertips shows that in South Tyneside this trend is increasing and getting better.
Population vaccination coverage: HPV vaccination coverage for one dose (Female 12- to 13-year-old)
This indicator release shows the proportion of female students in year 8 (aged 12 to 13) who have received the HPV vaccine for the financial year 2023/24.
- In South Tyneside the proportion of females that have received the HPV vaccine was 79.5%.
- This was significantly higher than the national proportion of 72.9% as well as the regional proportion of 75.0%.
- Fingertips shows that in South Tyneside this trend is decreasing and getting worse.
A&E Attendances (under 18 years old)
This indicator release shows the accident and emergency attendance rate per 1,000 for those aged 0-17 years old for the financial year ending 2023/24.
- In South Tyneside the A&E attendance rate was 812.2 per 1,000.
- This is significantly higher than the national rate of 460.3 per 1,000 and the regional rate of 618.8 per 1,000.
- A trend cannot be calculated for this indicator.
Mortality Profile:
As of May 2025, LSOA deprivation deciles, Integrated care board (ICB) and NHS region data have been added for 55 indicators in the Fingertips mortality profile. This data covers the years 2011 through to 2022, with LSOA deprivation deciles, ICB and NHS region data also available for the following indicators for the period 2021 to 2023:
- Stillbirth rate
- Infant mortality rate
- Neonatal mortality rate
- Post-neonatal mortality rate
Obesity Profile
In May 2025, five indicators have been updated as part of the Fingertips Obesity Profile. These indicators are:
- Obesity prevalence in adults
- Overweight (including obesity) prevalence in adults
- Percentage of physically active adults
- Percentage of physically inactive adults
- Percentage of adults meeting the '5 a day' fruit and vegetable consumption recommendations.
Obesity prevalence in adults
This indicator release shows the percentage of adults aged 18+ who are classified as obese for the financial year 2023/24. Obesity is categorised as having a BMI greater than or equal to 30.
- In South Tyneside the prevalence of adults classified as obese is 31.1%.
- This is significantly higher than the national prevalence of 26.5%. Although this isn't significantly different to the regional prevalence of 32.5%.
- A trend cannot be calculated for this indicator.
Overweight (including obesity) prevalence in adults
This indicator release shows the percentage of adults aged 18+ who are classified as overweight or obese (having a BMI greater than or equal to 25) for the financial year 2023/24.
- In South Tyneside the prevalence of adults classified as overweight or obese is 70%.
- This is significantly higher than the national prevalence of 64.5%. Although this isn't significantly different to the regional prevalence of 70.4%.
- A trend cannot be calculated for this indicator.
Percentage of physically active adults
This indicator release shows the percentage of survey respondents aged 19 and over who are doing at least 150 moderate intensity minutes of physical activity per week for the financial year 2023/24.
- In South Tyneside the percentage of survey respondents who are considered physically active is 60.4%.
- This is significantly lower than the national percentage of 67.4% as well as the regional percentage of 64.5%.
- A trend cannot be calculated for this indicator.
Percentage of physically inactive adults
This indicator release shows the percentage of survey respondents aged 19 and over who are doing less than 30 moderate intensity minutes of physical activity per week for the financial year 2023/24.
- In South Tyneside the percentage of survey respondents who are considered physically inactive is 28.5%.
- This is significantly higher than the national percentage of 22.0% as well as the regional percentage of 24.9%.
- A trend cannot be calculated for this indicator.
Percentage of adults meeting the '5 a day' fruit and vegetable consumption recommendations.
This indicator release shows the percentage of survey respondents aged 16 and over who are eating five or more portions of fruit and vegetables on the previous day for the financial year 2023/24.
- In South Tyneside, 20.5% of survey respondents aged 16 and over met the '5-a-day' consumption recommendation.
- This is significantly lower than the national percentage of 31.3% as well as the regional percentage of 28%.
- A trend cannot be calculated for this indicator.
Other releases of note
NHS digital has published 24/25 Quarter 3 of their Statistics on Local Stop Smoking Services in England. Included in this release is data detailing Stop smoking pregnant quit rate and Stop smoking quit rate in South Tyneside and other local authorities.
- In South Tyneside the Stop Smoking pregnant quit rate was 33.33%.
- This is lower than the national quit rate of 45.85%.
- The rate of smokers that have successfully quit at 4 weeks in South Tyneside is 47.68%.
- This is lower than the national quit rate of 53.76%.
