Overview of the proposal

The proposal includes:

  • the reduction in speed limit to 20mph on the following roads in Boldon Colliery:
    • Church View
    • Davison Street
    • Donkins Street
    • Front Street
    • Grays Terrace
    • Simpson Close
    • Station Road
    • Toppings Street
    • Wilton Gardens North and South
    • Hedworth Lane including north and south back
    • North Road
    • various unnamed roads - see details in legal notice below
  • the construction of speed cushions on Hedworth Lane and North Road
  • the construction of a speed table on Hedworth Lane

South Tyneside Council (Boldon Colliery Area 20mph) Order 2025

South Tyneside Council proposes to make an Order under Section 84 of and Schedule 9 to, the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984 and all other enabling powers.

The effect of the Order will be to reduce the speed limit in the Boldon Colliery Area to 20mph on:-

the entire lengths of :-

  • Church View
  • Davison Street
  • Donkins Street
  • Front Street
  • Grays Terrace
  • Simpson Close
  • Station Road
  • Toppings Street
  • Wilton Gardens North
  • Wilton Gardens South
  • Hedworth Lane from a point 5 metres east of its junction with Abingdon Way for its entire length
  • North Road from its junction with Cotswold Lane for 485 metres in a northerly direction
  • North back Hedworth Lane from numbers 64 to 10
  • South back Hedworth Lane from numbers 17 to 45

The following unnamed roads:-

  • from junction of 28 to 32 Hedworth Lane in a north westerly direction for 45 metres
  • from a point 48 metres north of Station Road's junction with Hedworth Lane for 30 metres in a westerly direction
  • between Grays Terrace and Hedworth Lane
  • between Davison Street and Front Street
  • from its junction of 34/45 Davison Street for 16 metres east to Donkins Street
  • from its junction of 9/10 Davison Street for 16 metres east to Donkins Street
  • from its junction with North Road from 36/37 Fenwick Street for 143 metres in a westerly direction
  • from its junction with North Road from 22/23 Fenwick Street for 40 metres in a westerly direction
  • from the junction of North Road with Fenwick Street to Toppings Street

Full details of these proposals are contained in the draft order which, together with a plan showing the lengths of road affected and a statement of the Council's reasons for proposing to make the Order, may be inspected from Monday to Friday during normal office hours at the Town Hall at the address below.

Highways Act 1980 - Sections 90A and 90C Hedworth Lane and North Road, Boldon Colliery Proposed construction of speed cushions and speed table

Traffic calming proposals 2025

NOTICE is given that the Council of the Borough of South Tyneside in exercise of its powers under Section 90A of the Highways Act 1980, after consultation and in accordance with Section 90C of the Highways Act 1980 and under all other enabling powers proposes to construct speed cushions complying with the Highways (Road Humps) Regulations 1999 as traffic calming measures consisting of 1.7m x 4.0m  speed cushions on Hedworth Lane and North Road, Boldon Colliery and a kerb to kerb width x 9m speed table on Hedworth Lane, Boldon Colliery.  The speed limit on the roads is 30 mph with a proposal to reduce the speed limit to 20 mph. The traffic calming is necessary to reduce traffic speeds.

The proposed speed cushions will consist of a raised surface 75 mm above the existing carriageway.  The proposed locations are as follows:-

Schedule 1 - Speed cushions (1.7m width x 4.0m length)

Hedworth Lane

Triad speed cushions located 90m south of its junction with Abingdon Way

Hedworth Lane

Triad speed cushions located 165m south of its junction with Abingdon Way

Hedworth Lane

2no. speed cushions located 13m west of its junction with Front Street

Hedworth Lane

1no.speed cushion located 30m east of its junction with Grays Terrace

Hedworth Lane

1no.speed cushion located 30m west of its junction with Davison Street

Hedworth Lane

1no.speed cushion located 50m east of its junction with Wilton Cottages

Hedworth Lane

1no.speed cushion located 60m east of its junction with Wilton Cottages

North Road

Triad speed cushions located 35m south of its junction with Wells Street

North Road

Triad speed cushions located 105m south of its junction with Wells Street

Triad speed cushions located 185m south of its junction with Wells Street

Triad speed cushions located 185m north of its junction with Cotswold Lane

Triad speed cushions located 80m north of its junction with Cotswold Lane

 

The proposed speed table will consist of a raised surface 100 mm above the existing carriageway

Schedule 2 - Speed Table (kerb to kerb width x 9.0m length)

Hedworth Lane

The centre of the speed table is to be located 60m west of the junction with Fawley Close for 6.5m in a northerly direction with ramps measuring 2m in length
