Overview

H bar markings, also known as 'access protection markings' or 'keep clear' markings, are white lines on the road, usually in front of a driveway or garage.

They tell drivers not to park there because it may block access.

You can ask the Council to install a new H bar marking, or to repaint or extend an existing marking.

Costs

Customer notice

Charges apply for any applications made after 1 April 2025.

  • Install a new H bar marking (£150)
  • Repaint an existing H bar marking (£150)
  • Extend an existing H bar marking (£50)

You will only be charged if your application is successful.

If you request a new marking, you must agree to the costs of any future maintenance, for example, if the marking needs to be re-painted or removed.

Eligibility criteria

We can only install an H bar marking if the driveway and footpath crossing are not obvious to other drivers.

We cannot install an H bar marking if:

  • there is a 'no waiting' restriction (yellow line)
  • there is bus bay at or next to the location
  • there is an 'edge of carriageway' marking (white line)
  • the marking would be within a parking bay

What happens after you apply

It might take up to 10 weeks to get a decision.

If your application is successful, we will contact you to take payment over the phone.

If someone is parked on an H bar marking

H bar markings are 'advisory' only. The Council cannot take action if a vehicle is parked on an H bar marking.

If drivers are repeatedly parking across your drive, you should contact the Police on the non-emergency number 101.
