Overview of the proposal

The proposal includes:

Incorporating several free car parks into the relevant Consolidation Order to allow Civil Enforcement Officers to monitor / patrol these car parks to prevent indiscriminate parking and overstay in electric vehicle charging bays and issue fines where necessary.

South Tyneside Council (Free Car Parks South Shields, Jarrow and East Boldon) Order 2025

South Tyneside Council proposes to make an Order under the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984 and all other enabling powers.

The effect of the Order will be to amend the existing Foreshore and Off Street Parking Places Consolidation Order to include:

  • Dale Street Car Park, South Shields
  • Flagg Court Car Park, South Shields
  • Dean Road Car Park, South Shields
  • Wawn Street Car Park, South Shields
  • Tyne Dock Car Park, South Shields
  • Portberry Street Car Park, South Shields
  • Horsley Hill Square Car Park, South Shields
  • Chapel Road Car Park, Jarrow
  • Tyne Street Car Park, Jarrow
  • Hibernian Car Park, Jarrow
  • Napier Street Car Park, Jarrow
  • Boker Lane Car Park, East Boldon.

This will allow our Civil Enforcement Officers  to monitor/patrol these car parks to prevent indiscriminate parking and overstay in Electric Vehicle Charging Bays and issue fines where necessary. Parking in all of these car parks will remain free of charge.

Full details of these proposals are contained in the draft order which, together with plans and a statement of the Council's reasons for proposing to make the Order, may be inspected from Monday to Friday during normal office hours at the Town Hall at the address below. Alternatively, you can request a copy of the documentation by emailing kathryn.ruddy@southtyneside.gov.uk.

If you wish to raise an objection, express support or make any other observations about these proposals, you must make them in writing to the Council's Legal Services Department at the address below or by using the same email address above by the 21 February 2025. Any objections must specify the grounds on which they are made.
