The Mayor of South Tyneside, Councillor Norman Dick has commended local heroes on this year's Queen's Birthday Honours List.

The Mayor said: "The Mayoress and I would like to congratulate everyone on the Queen's Honours List, especially local heroes Josh Trueman, Nilima Rahman and Brendan Foster who are all from South Tyneside.

"South Tyneside Council's #ProudtoSupport campaign was created in the early days of the coronavirus pandemic, aimed at celebrating local heroes who were going above and beyond to support others. Josh received our highest number of nominations for a #Proud thank you, demonstrating that his efforts were greatly appreciated by the community. Given the outpouring of support for Josh, it was only fitting that he was subsequently put forward for a Queen's Honour, so it is wonderful to see that his efforts have been recognised by Her Majesty, The Queen.

"Nilima is another asset to the community of South Tyneside, where she has gone above and beyond to help the community through her work as a bank employee at Virgin Money. She has helped people through what has been a worrying time for so many and we would like to thank her for her contribution.

"I would also like to offer my heartfelt congratulations on the great news that Brendan Foster has been awarded a Knighthood for his work for the Great North Run. The Great North Run, which has grown into the largest half-marathon in the world, truly is a symbol of Northern pride, resilience and community spirit - and we are so grateful for his work over the past forty years to build it into the major event it is today.

"Final congratulations are in order for Tyne and Wear Fire Service's Chief Fire Officer, Chris Lowther, who has been awarded the Queen's Fire Service Medal. Here at South Tyneside Council, we are immensely grateful for the work of the Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service and are proud to work alongside them to help keep local people safe.

"It is always great to see local heroes get national recognition for their good work. We have such a compassionate community here in South Tyneside, with incredible levels of social action and civic pride. We are immensely grateful to those individuals who step up during times of crisis, and who inspire others to follow in their footsteps.

"I would like to say a huge thank you to Josh, Nilima and Brendan on behalf of the whole of South Tyneside. You have made the Borough of South Tyneside extremely proud."
