About the Course

The governing board's role is essentially one of reviewing the head teacher's decision to exclude a pupil from school permanently or for periods of over 15 days. These meetings occur as and when the need arises.

This course will provide governors with an overview of the current position regarding exclusion, including an overview of numbers and the reasons. There are concerns in general that substance abuse and knife crime is on the increase. The course will aim to look at the most recent exclusion information to ask if it correlates with that view.

The course will cover what governors should look for in the information presented to them and what they need to understand, to allow them to discharge this duty appropriately, taking into account the relevant guidance and legislation.

The course will cover:

  • The role of the pupil discipline committee;
  • The legal framework for suspension and permanent exclusion;
  • Alternatives to suspension and permanent exclusion;
  • The decisions open to governors;
  • What happens to a pupil when they are permanently excluded;
  • The independent review.

The course will also cover an overview of the role of the Education Welfare Team and the Working Together to Improve School Attendance guidance which will be statutory from 19th August 2024. It will share the key responsibilities of the school, local authority and governors in improving school attendance.

This course is suitable for all Governors
