Public health news: September 2024

Welcome to Restart!

The Restart Integrated Domestic Abuse Service is South Tyneside Council's in-house service offering support for anyone impacted by domestic abuse in South Tyneside.

Independent Domestic Violence Advisors (IDVA) and Independent Sexual Violence Advisors (ISVA)

The IDVA & ISVA services work with victims of domestic and sexual abuse across all risk levels.

This specialist support can be offered both over the phone or in person.

Staff will explore risk and safety management and work with the client to implement individual safety plans. This support can include risk assessing, safety planning, civil and criminal court support, emotional support and a bespoke advocacy service.

They help people who have been subjected to domestic abuse from the point of crisis to increase long-term safety.

Behaviour Change Programmes

Restart offer 2 Behaviour Change programmes for those who perpetrate abuse within their relationships.

Both programmes offer one to one case management to work with individuals who want to address their abusive behaviours.

The Hub and Spoke Model offers one to one work with those identified as being high risk / high harm repeat perpetrators whilst the other programme is available for people who do not meet the criteria for the Hub & Spoke programme.

All identified victims of those attending these programmes will be offered specialist support to ensure their safety.

Sanctuary Scheme

The sanctuary scheme installs additional home security, free of charge, to anyone in South Tyneside impacted by domestic abuse.

Reflect Parenting Engagement team

Intensive support to help parents to work through the grief and loss that is felt when children have been removed from their care through care proceedings.

Restart Targeted Response

Restart, in partnership with Northumbria Police, offer a new initiative that has been set up to provide proactive early interventions.

It targets communities and individuals who may face barriers to accessing domestic abuse support services.

It will also play a key role in increasing community awareness of domestic abuse and the help available. This includes training and working with existing community groups to build their capacity to identify and support domestic abuse victims.

Children and Young People

Emotional Support for Children & Young People

We offer structured one to one support for children & young people (between the ages of 5 and 17) who have been impacted by domestic abuse in the family home.

Support will also be offered to the non-abusing parent to rebuild family bonds and increase the resilience of the whole family.

Young People's Violence Advisors (YPVAs)

Support for young people (aged between 13 and 17) who have been subjected to domestic abuse.

The YPVA will also work towards long term safety and the prevention of future abuse through early intervention in cases where a young person may be at risk.

Respect Young People Programme

The Respect Young People's Programme is an intervention for families where children or young people (aged between 8 and 18) are displaying abusive or violent behaviours towards the people close to them, particularly their parents or carers.

R.E.V.I.V.E Young Peoples Programme

The Restart REVIVE programme has been developed for those children aged between 7 and 13 who are beginning to show signs of abusive or violent behaviours towards their family members.

Specifically this programme is for children who are struggling to regulate their emotions and often unable to verbalise them, resulting in them becoming angry and 'lashing out'.

Dating Detox
