Intelligence Update - June 2024

Sexual and Reproductive Health Profile

 

All STI indicators from the Sexual and Reproductive Health Profile were updated to 2023, including:

 

  • The rate of gonorrhoea in South Tyneside was 94 per 100,000. This represented a trend which was increasing and getting worse. Despite this, the rate was significantly better than the North East (114) and England (149).
  • The rate of syphilis in South Tyneside was 22.9 per 100,000. This represented no significant change over the last five years. This was not significantly different to the North East (21.3) and England (16.7).
  • In South Tyneside, 18.7% of females aged 15 to 24 were screened for chlamydia. This was significantly worse than the North East (20.7) and England (20.4).
  • The rate of all new STI diagnosis in South Tyneside was 521 per 100,000. This was significantly below the North East (589) and England (704).

 

Wider Determinants of Health

 

Ten indicators from the Wider Determinants of Health were updated, including:

 

  • In 2022, the rate of long-term claimants of jobseeker's allowance in South Tyneside was 5.0 per 1,000. This represented a trend which was decreasing and getting better. However, this rate was significantly worse than the North East (2.6) and England (1.4).
  • In 2023, the average weekly earnings in South Tyneside was £502.10. This was not significantly different to the North East (£516.80) but was significantly worse than England (£565.70).
  • In 2022/23, the rate of economic inactivity was 29.4% in South Tyneside. Based off the last five years this trend has shown no change. The local rate was similar to the North East (26%) but was significantly worse than England (21.4%)
