Liver disease profile

 

The latest update of the liver disease profile included updated data for eight indicators. This includes:

  • In 2022 / 23, the hospital admission rate due to liver disease in males in South Tyneside was 261 per 100,000. This represents no significant change based on the past five years. The most recent rate was not significantly different to the rates for the North East (265.3) and England (194.8).
  • In 2022 / 23, the hospital admission rate due to liver disease in females in South Tyneside was 191.6 per 100,000. This represents no significant change based on the past five years. The recent rate was not significantly different to the North East (151) but was significantly worse than England (118.6).
  • During 2020 to 2022, the male under 75 mortality rate from liver disease in South Tyneside was 39.9 per 100,000. This was not significantly different to the North East (39.9) but was significantly worse than England (27.1). The female rate in South Tyneside was 32.2 per 100,000. This was significantly worse than the North East (21.8) and England (15.3).

 

Alcohol specific deaths

 

New data from the ONS was released detailing alcohol specific deaths within the range of the years 2020 to 2022.

  • There were 112 alcohol specific deaths in South Tyneside during this period, which was a rate of 24.8 per 100,000. This was a similar rate to the North East (20.7) and significantly higher than England (13.8).

 

Unpaid care expectancy

 

New data from the ONS has given insight into the average number of years people are expected to provide unpaid care beyond their current age between 2020 to 2022.

  • Males aged 15 in South Tyneside are expected to provide 5.8 years of unpaid care on average. This was lower than the average for females, which was 8.7. Our local rates were higher than the national averages, which for males is 5.3 years, and 7.6 for females.
