Musculoskeletal Health Profile

Three indicators in the Musculoskeletal Health Profile were updated to 2023. This includes:

  • In 2023, the percentage of people self-reporting a long-term musculoskeletal (MSK) problem was 24.8% in South Tyneside. This was not significantly different to the North East (23.1%) but was significantly worse than England (18.4%).
  • In 2023, the percentage of people self-reporting at least two long term conditions, at least one of which is MSK related was 20.1%. This was significantly worse than the North East (17.5%) and England (13.4%).
  • In 2023, the odds ratio of self-reported mental health conditions in people with an MSK condition compared with those without an MSK condition in South Tyneside was 1.7. This was higher than the North East (1.3) and England (1.4).

Suicide Prevention Profile

Three indicators in the Suicide Prevention Profile were updated for the period 2020 to 2022. This includes:

  • Between 2020 / 2022, the suicide rate for all persons was 8.9 in South Tyneside. This was significantly better than the North East (13.5) and not significantly different to England (10.3).
  • Between 2020 / 2022, the male suicide rate in was 15.6 in South Tyneside. This was not significantly different to the North East (21.4) and England (15.8).

Regarding the female suicide rate, the value was suppressed for disclosure control due to small count.

Labour Market Statistics

Labour market indicators for local authorities, regions, and counties were updated for the period of October 2022 to September 2023. These include:

  • In 2022 / 23, the percentage of people 16 and over who were unemployed was 6.7% in South Tyneside. This rate was higher than both the North East (4.2%) and England (3.8%).
  • In 2022 / 23, the percentage of 16 to 64 year olds who were economically inactive was 28.9% in South Tyneside. This was higher than the North East (25.3%) and England (21.1%).
  • In 2022 / 23, the percentage of people claiming Jobseeker's Allowance plus out of work Universal Credit was 5.6%. This was higher than the North East (4.1%) and England (3.7%).
