Help at Hand for Grieving Families

South Shields Town Hall will be bathed in a yellow glow next Tuesday to mark the end of national Grief Awareness Week.

The South Tyneside landmark is just one of many across the UK lighting up in a bid to raise awareness that help and support is available to all those who have suffered a bereavement.

Organised by the Good Grief Trust, the awareness week seeks to remind people that help and support is available.

Cllr Hetherington, Lead Member for Independence and Wellbeing, said: "Losing a loved one is always difficult but the pandemic has brought additional challenges for those struggling with loss. Due to the Covid pandemic and restrictions imposed, many people were unable to say goodbye to loved ones, had difficulty accessing bereavement services and experienced isolation and loneliness.

"However, it is important that people remember that help is available. This year has been challenging for everyone but for those who have lost a loved one, it has been particularly difficult. Although it is vital that we all continue to follow the guidance to remain safe at all times, I would urge people to not suffer in silence but reach out to access the support they need. In addition to the Good Grief Trust there are other support groups who provide an invaluable service in supporting people through their darkest times."

Councillor Hetherington added: "This year will be remembered as one in which far too many people were taken too soon. By lighting up our Town Hall, along with a host of other landmarks including Blackpool Tower, the National Theatre, cathedrals and bridges across the UK, we hope to send out a beacon of hope.

"Let's continue to work together, follow the guidance and beat the virus so that we can look forward to a better 2021."
