Sustainability Appraisal Report (2024)

About this publication

This Sustainability Appraisal Report has been prepared by LUC on behalf of South Tyneside Council as part of the integrated Sustainability Appraisal (SA) and Strategic Environmental Assessment (SEA) of the new South Tyneside Local Plan.

This report relates to the Publication Draft (Regulation 19) Local Plan (January 2024) and it should be read in conjunction with that document.

The purpose of the sustainability appraisal process is to appraise the social, environmental and economic effects of a plan from the outset to help ensure that decisions are made that contribute to achieving sustainable development.

It performs a key role in providing a sound evidence base for the plan.

The sustainability appraisal should inform the decision making process to facilitate the evaluation of alternatives. It also helps demonstrate that the plan is the most appropriate given the reasonable alternatives.

Consultation on the Sustainability Appraisal, as well as the draft Local Plan, took place between Monday 15 January and Sunday 3 March 2024.
