Public Health Outcomes Framework

The latest update of the Public Health Outcomes Framework includes new data for 30 indicators:

  • Four indicators from wider determinants of health domain, which cover inequalities in employment.
  • Twelve idicators from the health improvement domain, which cover child development, breastfeeding, and substance misuse treatment programmes. 
  • Fourteen idicators from the health protection domain, which covers population vaccination coverage for a range of vaccines and ages.

This update summarises the data for South Tyneside compared to the North East and England rates.

Wider Determinants of Health Domain

Four indicators from the wider determinants of health domain were updated. This includes:

Health Improvement Domain

Twelve indicators from the health improvement domain were updated. This includes:

  • In 2022 / 23, breastfeeding prevalence at 6 to 8 weeks after birth was 27%. This was the second lowest in the region for local authorities that had data present. It was also a 1.1% decrease from the previous year. This was significantly worse than both the North East (36.7%) and England (49.2%) rates.
  • In 2022 / 23, the percentage of pregnant women smoking at the time of delivery was 15.1%, which represents a 3% increase from 2021 / 22. This was the highest rate in the region. This was significantly worse than North East (12.5%) England (8.8%).

Note: The submitted breastfeeding rate for Q3 2022 / 23 was incorrect. To date, this has not been corrected in the published data. The local rate remained consistent with the previous year.

  • In 2022 / 23, the percentage of children achieving a good level of development at 2 to 2 and a half years was 66.4%, a decrease from 71% in 2021 / 22. This was the lowest in the region and was significantly worse than the North East (82.7%) and England (79.3%).
  • In 2023, the prevalence of severe obesity in year 6 children was 26.1%, a decrease from the previous year. This was not signifcantly different to the North East (25.8%) but was significantly worse than England (22.7%).
  • In 2022, the rate of successful completion of alcohol treatment was 35.6%. This rate was not significantly different to England (35.1%) and the North East (29.1%). South Tyneside's rate was the highest in the region. Successful completion in this context is defined as the number of adults that complete structured treatment for alcohol dependence in a year and who do not represent to treatment within 6 months.

Health Protection Domain

Fourteen indicators from the health protection domain were updated. This includes:

  • In 2022 / 23, MMR vaccination coverage for one dose at 2 years old was 97.3%. This was notably higher than the England average (89.3%) and slightly higher than the North East (94.6%).
  • In 2022 / 23, PCV vaccination coverage was 97.9%, which was a marginal drop from 99% in 2021 / 22. This was among the highest in the region and was slightly higher than the North East average (96.9%). Both were significantly better than the England average (93.7%)
  • In 2022 / 23, Hib / MenC booster vaccination coverage at 2 years was 97.2%, a decrease from 97.7% in 2021 / 22. This rate was significantly better than both England (88.7%) and the North East (94%).

Child Education: 2023 Update

Four indicators from the child health profile were updated. This includes:

Personal Wellbeing

Office for National Statistics (ONS) released data showing average scores for personal wellbeing across local authorities in the UK for the last year (2022 / 2023). The figures were all very similar to the previous year. The only notable change from 2021 / 22 was the score for anxiety, which increased by 0.5 points. The results are shown below:

  • Average life satisfaction - 7.3 out of 10
  • Happiness - 7.3 out of 10 (down)
  • Worthwhile - 7.5 out of 10
  • Anxiety - 3.3 out of 10
