Overview

An amber weather warning is in place for the North East until 9pm today (Fri 24 Jan).

A further yellow wind warning will be in place for the rest of Friday.  

Storm Éowyn is expected to bring very strong winds and widespread disruption.

The Met Office is warning that the storm could cause damage to property, with flying debris posing a threat. 


Disruption to Council services

  • Recycling Village closed on Friday 24 January 
    All bookings have been cancelled. We apologise for any inconvenience.

Coastal areas are also likely to experience large waves.

We would encourage the public to only undertake essential travel, during the duration of the storm.

To help keep lines free for emergencies, such as no heating / hot water or risk to life / property, please report all other incidents, such as a blown down fence which isn't urgent / dangerous / obstructing a public footpath.

Please make sure you secure any loose items you may keep outside, and make sure all windows and gates are securely shut.

Travel

Please check bus and train timetables, amending your travel plans if necessary.

If driving, check road conditions.

The Shields Ferry will not be operating today (Friday 24 Jan)

Fallen trees

Please do not visit greenspaces, especially in wooded areas as there is a chance of fallen trees and branches.

Fallen trees that have been reported to the Council: 

  • A tree is blocking road access to Downham Ct and Raynham Ct in South Shields. Our crews are aware and will open the road once safe. Please be aware that this will take some time to clear.
  • A tree has fallen on the junction of Crawley Avenue / Mill Lane Hebburn
  • Tree cleared from York Avenue and road open

Our crews are aware and will reopen the roads as soon as it is safe.

Other issues

  • New Road / Boker Lane junction traffic signals in Boldon have gone off. This has been reported into Regional Traffic Signals to action but it could lead to disruption.
  • Power cable hanging low on North Road, East Boldon. This has been reported to Northern PowerGrid.
