Cycling is great for physical and mental health!

Public Health News: December 2023

We want to celebrate the improvements of the N1 cycleway between South Shields and Whitburn by sharing with you the benefits of cycling.

Cycling boost your mood and it can also improve the symptoms of some mental health conditions like depression and anxiety.

Cycling is great for physical fitness and can help you maintain a healthy weight.

It can be accessible for all abilities and it is a great low-impact exercise, meaning it's easier on your joints compared to higher impact activities like running.

Regular cycling can reduce your risk in developing serious illnesses including:

  • heart disease
  • type 2 diabetes
  • stroke

It doesn't matter how fit you are, you can go at your own pace.

The bike seat holds 70% of your body weight, so the pressure on your joints is very low.

If you're new to cycling, recovering from an injury, or put off because you live in a hilly area, an electric bike might work for you.

The last few years have seen a lot of change, a lot of people started cycling or got back into it after a break.

The bike can give everyone freedom to choose how to travel and how to live their lives better and healthier. It can be used for exercise, commuting to work, going to the shops or even visiting friends and family.

The new cycleway between South Shields and Whitburn gives a safer route to travel, making it a great way to explore South Tyneside and beyond!

Cycling and Walking maps can be found at Go Smarter.

Not only is cycling better for the planet compared to driving a car, it is also better for you, your health and your finances. Buying a bike doesn't have to be expensive, you can visit Groundwork's Recycling Village and pick up a second-hand bike for as little as £10.

A lot of workplaces also have a Cycle to Work Scheme, including South Tyneside Council, so there's no excuse not to get on your bike.

Happy cycling!
