Self-Care Week in the Spotlight

A host of events and activities are being held across South Tyneside next week to mark Self-Care Week (13 - 19 November) and help residents improve their own self-care.

To launch the week the 'a better u' Health and Wellbeing Network is holding a free drop-In coffee morning at Cleadon Park Library on Monday, 13 November between 10am and 12.30pm. Free refreshments (tea, coffee and juice) and healthy soup will be on offer.

A number of local organisations will be supporting the event and offering help and advice on a variety of health and wellbeing topics. There will also be a free seated yoga taster session at 11am. Chair-based yoga embraces accessible postures and stretches for all, regardless of yoga experience and helps people discover mindfulness through gentle meditations, harmonizing mind and body. Seated yoga is perfect for newcomers or those seeking a soothing approach, especially for wheelchair users and those seeking respite.

Councillor Ruth Berkley, Lead Member for Adults, Health and Independence, said: "There are five simple steps we can all take to improve our wellbeing. These are: being active; connecting with others; taking notice; learning and giving.

"By including these into our daily lives, we could all improve our mental and physical health and wellbeing and enjoy happier lives."

The Council is hoping some people who come to the event will sign up to become 'a better u' champions. The champions are a group of volunteers who live and/or work across South Tyneside who share up-to-date information, advice and support. They also attend events to help share useful information to community groups and members of the public in a bid to help improve the health and wellbeing of their family, friends, colleagues and communities.
