Public Health News: September 2023

Age-friendly communities are places where people of all ages can live healthy and active lives.

These communities make it possible for people to stay in their homes, participate in the activities that they value and contribute to their communities, for as long as possible.

South Tyneside Council started their Age Friendly journey with the Centre for Ageing Better in March 2022.

A local baseline survey was completed in April 2023. The results were shared at four events across the borough.

These are some of the positive comments that were provided. There is a lot to be proud about.

  • ''The sea front beaches and parks are very well looked after and a pleasure to visit.''
  • ''The events, parades and activities are excellent''.
  • ''My wife and myself attend the gym and are made to feel welcome''.
  • ''Voluntary services are a credit to South Tyneside- great network''
  • ''Have had good service from my GP since I moved here 2 years ago''

There were also some comments that need further consideration.

  • ''Need to have more accessible toilets. Public buildings need to have more dementia friendly signage and visual cues''.
  • "More warden patrols to curb anti-social conduct''.
  • "I have good neighbours, but there isn't a sense if community in my area.''
  • ''If you are not internet savvy or don't have access to it, it is difficult to find out information''.
  • ''Trying to get help for our elderly loved one's is extremely depressing and stressful.''

The next step is to finalise a four-year action plan.

People from partner organisations are meeting in October to discuss these concerns and how they tie in with existing work.

The results of this will be presented to the Health & Wellbeing Board in January 2024.

The Age Friendly Community Steering Group is also preparing for the International Day of Older Persons (IDOP), which takes place on 1 October every year. Several events are being planned by Age Concern Tyneside South and experts are being asked to visit some of the Welcoming Places during the week of 2 to 7 October 2023.
