An event aimed at raising awareness of the careers available in Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM) is being held next week in South Tyneside.

South Tyneside Council is running the event in partnership with STEMettes - a social enterprise which seeks to inspire girls and non-binary people into STEM careers - with support from the Dogger Bank Community Fund.

The event will be held at South Tyneside College on Tuesday 11 July between 10am and 4pm.  Young women and non-binary young people aged between 15 and 25 will have the opportunity to develop their leadership and STEM skills alongside industry leaders.  A similar event held earlier in the year for a group of young women from St Joseph's Catholic Academy in Hebburn was a massive success with all participants reporting increased knowledge, awareness and confidence in their STEM abilities. In addition,  90% of attendees expressed an improvement in their mental health and confidence following the programme.

Councillor Jane Carter, Lead Member for Education and Skills, said: "These events are pivotal in helping the next generation of young women access aspirational careers in Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths.

"We have real opportunity on our doorstep with developments such as the Dogger Bank Wind farm and the Envision Battery manufacturing plant so it's vital that our young women have the skills and knowledge needed for these careers once they leave education."
