Intelligence Update - May 2023

  • The ONS have released 2021 mid-year population estimates, based on the results of the 2021 Census. They are not comparable with estimates for previous years. Rebased estimates for 2012 to 2020 will be published in due course, trends are currently unavailable.

Public Health Outcomes Framework

19 indicators have been updated in the May release of the Public Health Outcomes Framework including:

  • Children in absolute low income families (under 16s) was updated to 2021 / 22. Absolute low income is defined as a family in low income Before Housing Costs (BHC) in the reference year in comparison with incomes in 2010 to 2011. A family must have claimed one or more of Universal Credit, Tax Credits or Housing Benefit at any point in the year to be classed as low income in these statistics.
  • 27.2% of children in South Tyneside in 2021 / 2022 lived in absolute low income, the third highest in the region and significantly higher than both the North East and England.

19 indicators have been updated in the latest release of the Child and Maternal Health Profile. Indicators updated include:
