Information about the plaque

This commemorative plaque honours the contribution of the South Shields Sea Cadets building to South Tyneside's maritime history and heritage.

The building, which was originally built in 1936, was an operational shore base for the Royal Navy Volunteer Reserves and supplemented the facilities on the training ship HMS Satellite.

When the HMS Satellite shore base closed in 1959, the site became known as T.S. Collingwood.

Nowadays, the building provides a special place for our young as the home of the South Shields Sea Cadets.

It is also home to the original figurehead from the 1854 HMS Satellite.

This forms part of a display on the T.S Collingwood parade deck, commemorating all the different naval ships that carried the same name.

The plaque was privately funded and installed by the Sea Cadets. It was unveiled in Spring 2023.
