Market rights

South Tyneside runs a vibrant and popular market in South Shields that usually runs on a Monday, Friday and Saturday.

The Council has duty to protect its market from rivals. Events like commercial car boot sales have in the past been considered rivals.

The Council will take injunctive proceedings against any rival market that sets up within 6 and 2/3 miles of the market square.

Commercial, non-commercial and charitable car boot sales and jumble sales have taken place within the boundary if it was considered that there would be no detrimental effect on South Shields Market.

Advice on markets and the Council's market rights is available from the licensing team on 0191 427 2057 or by emailing StreetScene@southtyneside.gov.uk.
