Visitors attending South Tyneside's Christmas Parade tonight (Friday 9 December) are being advised that the fireworks finale has been stood down.

The popular Christmas Parade will make its way along Ocean Road towards Haven Point, with people encouraged to line the route from 5pm.

Visitors will see performances by the stunning Spark! drumming group as well as music, illuminated structures, street entertainers, dance groups and other members of the community. This will be followed by a performance by local singer Jenn Cherene at Harbour Drive.

However, the fireworks element, which was due to take place at 6pm, will no longer take place due to weather-related safety concerns.

A South Tyneside Council spokesperson said: "We are really looking forward to tonight's spectacular Christmas Parade.

"However, it is with great regret that the fireworks finale will not go ahead due to adverse weather and sea conditions which would make it unsafe to proceed.

"We appreciate some visitors may be disappointed but in the interests of safety we have been advised to cancel the fireworks elements of the event.

"The rest of the parade and live entertainment will go ahead as normal and is sure to provide a fantastic festive experience for the whole family to enjoy."

Temporary road closures will be put in place with motorists advised to follow the diversions.

The parade forms part of the wider Christmas programme of events which is being delivered by South Tyneside Council with support from Metro Radio.
