Overview

Parking scams

We have reports of fraudulent QR codes in our car parks. We do not operate a QR code payment system.

Payments should only be made by coins, card or the pay by phone service.

Pay by phone should by downloaded from your device's app store. Do not download from a link or website.

Report any QR codes to parkingteam@southtyneside.gov.uk

You can pay for parking at the machine or by using the PayByPhone app on your mobile phone.

On the app you can:

  • Pay for parking using a credit or debit card
  • Find car parks in the area
  • Create an account
  • See where you have parked
  • Be reminded when your parking is about to expire
  • Extend your parking time

Each car park has a unique location number. Parking officers can then look up the number plate to check where you have been parked.

Pay at the machine

You can pay with cash at all of our car parks.

We are currently adding the option to pay by card to all of our machines.

At the moment you can pay by card at the following car parks:

How to use PayByPhone

  1. Download the app
  2. Register for an account if you want to
  3. Enter the car park's location number
  4. Select how long you want to park for
  5. Pay for your parking

The app is available for Apple and Android users and can be downloaded at PayByPhone.

Parking permits

If you regularly park at South Shields Town Centre, or at the seafront, it may be cheaper to buy a parking permit.
