1. Introduction
This Privacy Notice tells you about what information we collect about you, how we use that information and who we share it with.
We will keep our privacy notice under regular review and will advise you of any updates on our website.
This Notice was last reviewed in October 2022.
2. Who we are
For the purposes of Data Protection legislation, South Tyneside Council is the Data Controller.
This notice describes how South Tyneside Council may use your information to deliver the A Better U Health and Wellbeing Champions project.
3. What type of personal information do we collect?
We may use the following information about you to make sure that we provide you with the right service, advice or support.
We will only use the minimum amount of information necessary to do so and will take every reasonable step to ensure the information is accurate.
Personal information:
- Name
- Location data
- Telephone number
- Email address
- Age range
- One or more factors specific to the cultural identity of a person
- One or more factors specific to the social identity of a person
4. How do we collect personal information?
We may collect your personal information in a number of ways, for example:
- In person
- In writing - for example letter or email
- Telephone calls
- Online forms
- Referrals from another department
5. Why do we collect your personal information?
We hold your information to enable the Council to deliver the A Better U Health and Wellbeing Champions project, which will allow us to pass on relevant information for you to share within your community.
We collect your information to enable us to lawfully be processing your personal data under the GDPR Article 6 to enable us to gain:
- Your consent
- For the performance of our public task
- To enable us to comply with our legal obligations
- In order to protect your vital interests or those of another person
- For the purpose of our legitimate interest
- We also need contact details in order to respond to each request such as an email address or via telephone
6. Who might we share your personal information with?
We will run training sessions through First Contact Clinical who will require your contact details.

We will not share your personal information with any other third parties unless you have specifically asked us to or we have a legal obligation to do so.
7. How long will we keep your personal information?
We will retain personal information for 1 year from closure of the A Better U Health and Wellbeing Champions Project, unless we are required by the government to keep it for longer.
This information will be securely destroyed when we no longer need it.
8. What is our legal basis for using your personal information?
To use your personal information there must be a lawful basis to do this, such as, through a contract, performing a public task or where there is a legal obligation.
The lawful basis we are relying on to process the personal data is processing necessary for the performance of a task carried out in the public interest or in the exercise of official authority vested in South Tyneside Council.
In relation to special category data the condition for processing we are relying on is processing is necessary for reasons of public interest in the area of public health, such as protecting against serious cross-border threats to health or ensuring high standards of healthcare and of medicinal products or medical devices.
9. How do we keep your personal information secure?
The security of your personal information is important to us. The records we keep about you are secure and are confidential within the Council.
The Council have a range of procedures, polices and systems to ensure that access to your records are controlled appropriately.
Anyone who receives information from us is also under a legal duty to only use the information for the purposes agreed and keep the information secure and confidential.
10. Is your personal information used overseas?
We will not process your personal information outside of the European Economic Area (EEA).

Your individual rights are set out in law.
Subject to some legal exemptions, you have the following rights:

If you feel that the Council has not handled your information correctly you can contact the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO).
