Overview

Asbestos is a mineral which was commonly used in buildings and as fire proofing from the 1950s to the mid-1980s.

If asbestos has been disturbed or damaged it must be made safe immediately.

Health risks

When fibres from damaged or disturbed asbestos are inhaled into the lungs, there is a risk of developing serious or even fatal diseases.

Where asbestos is found

Asbestos can be found in any building built or refurbished before the year 2000.

For more information about where asbestos can be found, go to Health and Safety Executive: Where can you find asbestos?.

Dealing with asbestos in your home

If you suspect asbestos in your home or garden, the condition and risk will need to be assessed by an experienced, trained surveyor.

The asbestos may be safe to leave and monitor, however, damaged asbestos with visible fibres will need to be made safe or removed completely.

If you live in a South Tyneside Homes property and are worried about asbestos, contact South Tyneside Homes on 0300 123 6633.

If you need to dispose of asbestos, there is a skip at Middlefields Depot where we can accept asbestos, only if it has come from your own domestic property.

To use the skip, you must arrange a time to deliver the waste. To do this, call 0191 427 7000.

The skip is available Monday to Friday from 8am to 4pm, and Saturday from 8am to 11.30am.

Please be aware, there are guidelines and laws associated with working with asbestos. For information, go to Health and Safety Executive: Asbestos essentials
