Overview

A ceremony to proclaim His Majesty King Charles III the new Sovereign took place in South Tyneside on Sunday 11 September.

Some roads will be closed in South Tyneside due to the Great North Run taking place. Please consider this in planning your journey.

To help you to plan your journey, please see below information on the majority of road closures and possible alternative routes. 

Please plan ahead and be aware that traffic will be particularly heavy before and after the proclamation event.


Road closure summary - Sunday 11 September 2022 

  • 02:45am - 17:30 - Bents Park Road in South Shields. Sea Way → Mowbray Road
  • 08:00 - 17:30 - Coast Rd (A183), from Redwell Lane  → Mowbray Road
  • 09:45 - 16:00 - A194(M) Whitemare Pool Interchange / (A194) Leam Lane  → John Reid Rd roundabout (A1300) (Eastbound only)
  • 09:45 - 16:00 - John Reid Rd (A1300) (Eastbound only) → Prince Edward Rd (A1300) → Redwell Lane / Coast Rd (A183) roundabout
  • 14:00 - 17:30 - Coast Rd (A183) from Marsden Rock to Redwell Lane (Northbound only)

Options for travelling to the local proclamation event from within the borough

From the Whitburn Area

  • A183, North Guards, Cleadon Lane into Britannia PH, Boldon Lane, New Road (B1298), Hubert Street, Abingdon Way, then onto the A184 towards Testo's, A19 N/B off at the Tunnel Portal, then A185, into the Arches Junction, then A194 through Port of Tyne junction, then taking the junction at Crossgate into Town Hall.

From the Cleadon Area

  • Boldon Lane, New Road, Hubert Street, Abingdon Way, then onto the A184 towards Testo's, A19 N/B off at the Tunnel Portal, then A185, A194, taking the junction at Crossgate into Beach Road / Town Hall.

From the Boldons Area

  • Either A184 or New Road into A19 Testo's N/B off at the Tunnel Portal, then A185 onto the A194, then taking the junction at Crossgate into Beach Road / Town Hall.

From the Hebburn / Jarrow Areas

  • A185 (Victoria Road West, Victoria Road East) heading East on A185 into A194 at the Arches junction, the A194 through Port of Tyne junction, then taking the junction at Crossgate into Town Hall.

From the Fellgate Area

  • Fellgate Avenue, then turn left onto Hedworth Lane, A19 N/B off at the Tunnel Portal, then A185 onto the A194, then taking the junction at Crossgate into Beach Road / Town Hall.

From Scotch Estate (impacted by John Reid Road closure)

  • W/B on the A194 into Lindisfarne junction, A19 S/B into Fellgate Junction, back onto A19 N/B into the Tunnel Portal, then A185 onto the A194, then taking the junction at Crossgate into Beach Road / Town Hall

From Horsley Hill (impacted by Coast Road closures)

  • Highfield Road into Imeary Street, Westoe Road then into Beach Road / Town Hall.

South Shields (main roads affected by closures)

John Reid Road

  • South of the John Reid Road - Whiteleas Way, Benton Road, then follow the Boldon routing above.
  • North of the John Reid Road - internal routes will be open, without closures.

Prince Edward Road

  • South of Prince Edward Road - Sunderland Road, A1018 into Britannia PH junction, then follow the Cleadon routing above.
  • North of Prince Edward Road - internal routes will be open, without closures.

Public transport

Limited local bus services in operation, but a regular metro service is in operation.
