Funding to Reduce Summer Time Crime

A host of events and activities are on offer for young people in South Tyneside, thanks to funding from the Police and Crime Commissioner's Violence Reduction Unit.

The Council and its partners will run a wide range of diversionary activities over the summer months which will support positive engagement with young people to promote more constructive use of leisure time.

Activities on offer include surfing lessons, gym and climbing sessions as well as weekly sports sessions delivered by South Shields Football Club in partnership with the Council's Youth Service.

Councillor Adam Ellison, Lead Member for Children, Young People and Families, said: "We know everyone is keen to enjoy the lighter nights and warm weather. However, it is a sad fact of life that we tend to see a spike in crime and anti-social behaviour at this time of year.

"It is only a small minority of youths who cause a nuisance but by offering them diversionary activities we hope to make South Tyneside a safer and better place to live and visit for everyone."

Staff will also work with the police and Nexus at 'hot spot' metro stations where people have reported feeling unsafe. They will talk to young people to educate them about the dangers of getting involved with criminal activities and encourage them to make better choices.

Northumbria Police and Crime Commissioner, Kim McGuinness, said: "Violence is unacceptable at any time of the year, and now that summer has arrived, we all want to enjoy everything our region has to offer - especially now we are seeing some normality back in our lives.

"But it's so important that everyone feels safe and that support is readily available to those who need it.

"That's why the Violence Reduction Unit have invested over £100,000 to fund additional officers, more youth work and extra activities throughout the summer in Northumberland, Tyne and Wear.

"By giving individuals access to opportunities, we can divert them from crime and ensure they make positive decisions for the future."
