History

The development of this riverside park and the marina area, on the south bank of the Tyne, began in the 1970s.

Land was reclaimed from 75 acres of derelict land which was once dominated by ship building, alkali, copper and sulphur works.

The riverside was transformed in to an attractive leisure area with a surprising variety of wildlife.

The black painted cut-steel viewpoint markers and bench were designed by Matthew Jarratt and Neil Canavan, in conjunction with local school and community groups, in 1996.
