Regeneration

In early 2011, the Council appointed internationally renowned landscape architects Grant Associates to design a new public park on the former coal staithes site at Harton Quays on South Shields' riverside.

Balfour Beatty began work on site in June 2012, and the park was completed in September 2013.

On 26 November 2013 presenter Dr Julia Bradbury officially opened Harton Quays Park to the public.

The new park, which stretches along the River Tyne from the ferry landing to The Customs House, is an attractive gateway into South Shields Town Centre.

The high specification design includes a curved stone ribbon wall, a promenade, a striking water feature, lawns and colourful planting, as well as garden seating areas and a dramatic 'pine grove' viewing point across the river.

The impressive curved ribbon wall, made of 144 precast concrete panels, is a unique feature helping to maximise the park's superb riverside location.

The amphitheatre, close to The Customs House, is regularly used for public performances of drama and music.

The park was jointly funded by South Tyneside Council and the Homes and Communities Agency.
