Second hand uniforms

The Council usually works with Churches Together South Tyneside, the Key Project and the Salvation Army during the summer holidays to collect and recycle school uniforms.

These uniforms are normally made available to families at the Salvation Army South Shields branch.

Check with your school

Some schools organise for school uniform to be donated and they distribute this for free.

Contact your school directly to find out if they can offer any support.

School uniform grants

The Council does not offer financial help to buy school uniforms.

Families in receipt of free school meals whose children are starting or moving schools in 2024, are to receive supermarket vouchers to help with the cost of school uniforms.

The vouchers are worth £40 for children moving into reception or are moving into Year 3 at a junior school and £70 for those starting secondary school.

In addition, every school will be given a payment of £600 to help support families who aren't eligible for free school meals with the costs of school uniform.
