About Whitburn Cemetery

Whitburn Cemetery opened in 1882, and covers an area of 5 acres.

Anyone can be buried here irrespective of where they live or their religious beliefs.

The cemetery chapel is available to be used for funeral services.

In addition to the memorials on the graves, boulder memorials are located around the perimeter of the chapel.

These can be purchased in memory of a loved one who is not buried in Whitburn Cemetery.

Visiting Whitburn Cemetery

Cars are allowed to drive through the cemetery. The speed limit is 10 mph.

There is no cemetery office on site.

The cemetery is subject to a Public Spaces Protection Order relating to dog control. This means that dogs must be kept on a lead no longer than 1.5 metres at all times.

You must not allow a dog to foul without picking it up.

Council Officers have the power to issue a Fixed Penalty Notice for dog fouling and dog control offences.

The fine (or Fixed Penalty Notice) for these offences is £100, reduced to £50 if paid within 7 days.

Family history and genealogy research

Copies of Whitburn Cemetery's burial records are held in the Local Studies Department of The Word.

The records are free to use.

They're in great demand so it's a good idea to make an appointment to use them.

You can contact the library on 0191 427 1818.

If you're unable to visit the library, we can conduct research for you. However, there is a charge for this service.

Contact us for more information or use the burial records search facility.
