About Westoe Cemetery

Westoe Cemetery opened in 1857, and covers an area of 15 acres.

Some well know local figures are buried here including Dr Thomas Winterbottom and Robert Ingham.

The cemetery is now closed to new graves, although existing family graves may still be used.

There is no chapel or office on site and the cemetery is closed to vehicles.

The cemetery is subject to a Public Spaces Protection Order relating to dog control. This means that dogs must be kept on a lead no longer than 1.5 metres at all times.

You must not allow a dog to foul without picking it up.

Council Officers have the power to issue a Fixed Penalty Notice for dog fouling and dog control offences.

The fine (or Fixed Penalty Notice) for these offences is £100, reduced to £50 if paid within 7 days.

Family history and genealogy research

Copies of Westoe Cemetery's burial records are held in the Local Studies Department of The Word.

The records are free to use.

They're in great demand so it's a good idea to make an appointment to use them.

You can contact the library on 0191 427 1818.

If you're unable to visit the library, we can conduct research for you. However, there is a charge for this service.

Contact us for more information or use the burial records search facility.
