About Harton Cemetery

Harton Cemetery opened in 1891, and covers an area of 50 acres.

Anyone can be buried here irrespective of where they live or their religious beliefs.

Some well known local people are buried here including members of the Readhead family, Captain Richard Annand VC and the family of James Simpson Kirkpatrick.

The cemetery lodge, entrance gates and chapel are Grade II listed buildings and the chapel is available to be used for funeral services.

For more information about these buildings, see listed buildings

Please note that there is no cemetery office on site.

Cars are permitted to drive through the cemetery, although we ask that drivers do not exceed the speed limit of 10 mph.

Whilst we welcome careful and considerate dog owners, dogs must be kept on a lead no longer than 1.5 metres.

It is an offence to not clean up after your dog.

Family history and genealogy research

Copies of Harton Cemetery's burial records are held in the Local Studies Department of The Word.

The records are free to use.

They're in great demand so it's a good idea to make an appointment to use them.

You can contact the library on 0191 427 1818.

If you're unable to visit the library, we can conduct research for you. However, there is a charge for this service.

Contact us for more information or use the burial records search facility.
