Overview
Hospice care for children is a part of the broader, palliative care approach for children with life limiting conditions.
A "life limiting condition" is described as one where there is no reasonable hope of cure and from which children and young people will die.
This includes some conditions that cause progressive deterioration, some conditions that will lead to premature death, and some conditions that are not progressive conditions, but which are irreversible, cause severe disability and susceptibility to health complications, leading to a likelihood of premature death.

Hospice care
There are no hospice type services for children located in South Tyneside, but there are services in the region that families can access.

With each of these providers there is an agreed "pathway" between the Primary Care Trust and the Council.
This means that when a placement is needed, agreement is reached with the provider about the level of care that will be available and how the cost of the placement will be met.
