More than 100 organisations in South Tyneside were able to host community events and activities over the Queen's Platinum Jubilee celebrations - thanks to special funding from the Council.

South Tyneside Council's Platinum Jubilee Community Grant saw £34,0000 distributed to schools, clubs, community associations, older people's housing and supported living projects as well as 'Friends of' groups.

One of these was a community Picnic in the Park at West Park in South Shields organised by the Friends of West Park where people enjoyed a day of jubilee-themed entertainment.

"It was an absolutely brilliant event which really brought the community together," said Cllr Gladys Hobson, Chair of the Friends of West Park.

Councillor Ruth Berkley, Lead Member for the Voluntary Sector, Partnerships and Equalities, said: "I am delighted that we were able to financially support so many groups to create wonderful memories to look back on over this momentous occasion.

"South Tyneside really got behind the jubilee and came together to pay tribute to the Queen's remarkable achievement of public service over the past 70 years. I'm just pleased we were able to make it that bit extra special for so many people."
