Content:
Poetry plays an important role in the lives of our children and young people. It offers a unique way to foster creativity, support mental wellbeing, and encourage self-expression. Notably, it can be a powerful tool in literacy education, particularly for disadvantaged children who consistently show higher engagement with poetry (The National Literacy Poetry Report, 2024). It can't just be a 'one-day-a-year' event, multiple strategies need to be in place to raise the profile of poetry so children can reap its rewards year-round.
This session will cover:
- How to teach poetry across the Primary Phase ensuring coverage of the National Curriculum requirements
- Progression across year groups
- The different types & forms of poetry
- The importance of performance
- How to create a poetry friendly classroom
Expected Impact on Schools:
- To build teachers' knowledge, confidence and expertise in the delivery of poetry
Target Group:
- Teachers
- Support Staff
- ECTs
