If you're worried someone might be radicalised (PREVENT strategy)

Overview

If you are worried someone is at risk of being radicalised, the governement have a strategy to help tackle this called Prevent.

Prevent is the government's strategy to help:

  • local areas to understand the threat of terrorism
  • to stop people becoming terrorists or supporting terrorism

In South Tyneside, the Community Safety Partnership prioritises work to prevent people becoming terrorists or supporting terrorism.

Prevent is part of the government's counter-terrorism strategy known as CONTEST.

The aim of CONTEST is to reduce the risk to the UK and its citizens and interests overseas from terrorism.

For more information on CONTEST see, GOV.UK: Counter-terrorism strategy (CONTEST) 2023.

What you should do if you are concerned about someone

If you have a concern that someone may be vulnerable to being drawn into terrorism or extremism, fill out a Prevent referral form and email to: FIMUNorth@CTPNE.police.uk

Anyone can refer an individual who they feel is vulnerable to radicalisation.

Referring someone does not automatically make them a criminal. The goal of the referrals is safeguarding individuals and protecting the public.

If there is an immediate risk of a terror incident taking place you must call 999 or the Anti-Terrorist Hotline on 0800 789321.
