Cemetery Maintenance

Press team , 16 January 2020 10:55

Work will get underway next week (w/c 20 January) to check the safety and stability of memorials in a South Shields cemetery.

The work in Westoe cemetery will see the removal of plants and foliage which could cause damage to walls and compromise the safety of memorials. Headstones and memorials will also be checked and secured to make sure they are stable.

Councillor Joan Atkinson, Lead Member for Area Management and Community Safety, said: "We recognise that cemeteries are places for quiet reflection but we hope people understand that we have to carry out this maintenance work as a matter of public safety.

"We always try to keep disruption to a minimum and apologise to mourners at this time."

Anyone with an enquiry about this work should contact Bereavement Services on 0191 4273 190.
